Southwestern wins thrilling match with Hardin-Simmons, blanked by No. 24 Trinity

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University women's tennis team split two contests Saturday at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts. The Pirates rallied to edge Hardin-Simmons, 5-4, but were blanked by No. 24 Trinity in the nightcap, 9-0.

Southwestern (5-4) is scheduled to resume its home stand on Tuesday, March 8, as the squad will host Rhodes. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.


MATCH ONE

The Pirates claimed two of three doubles tilts to take an early 2-1 advantage.

However, the Cowgirls responded with a point at No. 1 singles as Taite Drews-Jones retired due to an injury. Hardin-Simmons picked up a win at No. 5 singles to take a 3-2 lead.

Jesse Martinez then posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hannah Smith at the fourth position to allow Southwestern to pull even.

After the Cowgirls earned another point at No. 3 singles to take a 4-3 lead, Maranda Kahl finished off Sabra Zullo at the sixth spot in straight sets to again even up the match.

Anna Schneemann, who dropped the opening set at the second spot, rallied with identical 6-2 wins in frames two and three to clinch the match for the Pirates.
