Tennis opens season at Schreiner Tournament

Southwestern hit the courts for the first time this spring and had a strong outing as the women finished in 2nd of nine teams and the men took 6th.

The Pirate women advanced to the finals in nearly every flight, taking the championship in flight one and four. Julie Swets breezed through her first two matches and took down ETBU's Bramlett in the final of flight one. Nicole Wilson posted 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-0 wins in her first two matches before defeating Schreiner's Anguiano to win flight four.

The women's doubles team snagged a pair of championships. Kali Rose/Wilson won in #2 doubles and Virginia Stofer/Maranda Kahl controlled #3 doubles, defeating OLLU in the final.

Trevor Searle led the men with a first place finish in #6 singles. He opened with a 7-6, 3-6, 10-4 win over Our Lady of the Lake's Galavis and won in straight sets in the quarterfinals to advance to the finals. In the finals, Searle won over USW's Cooper to take the championship.

William Ellis also advanced to the finals after 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 and 6-1, 6-2 wins early in the tournament. He was bested by ETBU's Longoria in the finals to take second place in #3 singles. Sam McCready captured fourth place after winning his first match 6-1, 3-6, 7-4, but fell in his final two matches.

In doubles action, David Strong/Khansari finished in second in #2 doubles after winning 8-6, 8-4 in their first two matches of the day before falling to OLLU.

Southwestern returns to Kerrville to face Schreiner and Sul Ross in dual matches on Saturday, February 14th at 10 am and 2pm.
