Southwestern shuts out Centenary in SCAC First Round

SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University women's tennis team made quick work of Centenary Friday afternoon picking up a 5-0 win over Centenary in the first round of the SCAC Women's Tennis Championships.

The Pirates have won five of their last seven and improved to 9-4 on the season.

Southwestern jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in doubles action as the tandem of Marieke Visser and Heba Abdul cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 3 position. Gabby Hunt and Virginia Stofer won at No. 2 doubles while Elizabeth Ellis and Aimee Blake battled for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.

Needing just two points to clinch the match Hunt and Visser steeped up to seal the win. Hunt and Visser both dispatched of their opponents with Hunt winning 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles position. Visser also breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 doubles to give the Pirates a 5-0 win.

The win also propels Southwestern into the second round where they will face the winner of Austin College and Schreiner Saturday at 2 p.m.
