Team effort gives Pirate women 5-4 win over ‘Roos

SHERMAN, Texas – The Southwestern University women's tennis team picked up a hard fought 5-4 win over Austin College Sunday afternoon at the Russell Tennis Center.

The Pirates improved to 5-2 with the win as the 'Roos fell to 2-8 overall. A complete team effort that came down to an impressive win at No. 6 singles helped the Pirates prevail.

Virginia Stofer claimed a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Anamariia Kheveli at the No. 6 position giving the Pirates the clinching point. The win gave Stofer a 5-1 mark in No. 6 singles this season.

Gabby Hunt and Marieke Visser also continued their successful play on the courts picking up wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions. Hunt earned a 7-6, 6-4 win at the No. 2 position while Visser picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.

Southwestern jumped out early earning two wins in doubles as Aimee Blake and Elizabeth Ellis won 8-6 at the No. 1 position. Stofer and Hunt also fought for an identical 8-6 win at the No. 2 position in doubles which ultimelty helped the Pirates prevail for the 5-4 win.

The Pirates return to the court next Saturday with a pair of home matches against Texas Lutheran and Southwestern Christian. Action from the Marvin D. Henderson Tennis Courts is set to begin at 10 a.m.
