Women’s tennis sweeps road matches

LONGVIEW, Texas – The Southwestern University women's tennis team swept a pair of matches on Saturday with a 7-2 win at Centenary and a 6-3 win in the nightcap at LeTourneau.

Southwestern improved to 4-1 with the win as the Pirates return to the court Monday to host St. Catherine.

The Pirate women were able to build an early lead in doubles action and never look back taking five straight matches in singles play to finish off Centenary.

Marieke Visser and Heba Abdel breezed to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles while Gabby Hunt and Virginia Stofer picked up an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Hunt started the Pirates streak with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position picking the win up over Katie Cornwall.

Southwestern saw Adbel and Stofer close out the match at No. 5 and No. 6 singles with identical 6-0, 6-2 wins.

After traveling down I-20 to Longview, the Pirates continued their winning ways picking up a 6-3 over LeTourneau.

The Pirates grabbed wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with a hard-fought win from Visser and Abdel, 9-7. Stofer and Hunt claimed an easier 8-1 win at the No. 2 position to help Southwestern take a 2-1 lead.

The bottom half of the lineup helped the Pirates hold on for the win as Visser, Abdel and Stofer all cruised to a win at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

Hunt helped close out the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
