Pirates cruise to 7-2 season opening win

GEORGETOWN – The Southwestern University women's tennis team opened the 2014 season with a commanding, 7-2 victory over visiting Howard Payne Wednesday.

The Pirates jumped out to a 2-1 lead after taking No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Gabby Hunt and Virginia Stofer quickly dispatched of their opponents 8-0 at the No. 2 position, while Heba Abdul and Marieke Visser were 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action the Pirates easily swept through the competition at the bottom of the lineup posting, 6-0, 6-1 wins from Visser and Stofer at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

Aimee Blake helped Southwestern take an important win at No. 1 singles as she battled back to defeat Chesey Goza, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.

Southwestern will start a six match road swing starting next Friday at East Texas Baptist.
