Tennis Fares Well in Home Opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The SU Men's and Women's tennis teams hit the courts to open their home spring season and came out with three wins and one loss over the weekend. 

It was a good day for SU tennis as both men and women teams came out ready for the first match of the season versus East Texas Baptist University. 

The SU Women's tennis team immediately took control of the match, taking a 3-0 lead coming out of doubles. Aimee Blake and Elizabeth Ellis (#1) won their match 8-1. Gabby Hunt and Virginia Stofer (#2) won 8-4 and Sarah Johnson and Marieke Visser (#3) easily won 8-1. 

In singles, the women also did not drop a match. Blake (#1) took care of Kent 6-4, 6-3 and Hunt (#2) effortlessly  beat Word 6-0, 6-1. Stofer (#3) easily handled Karson Kent 6-1, 6-1. Krampitz (#4) defeated Ledbetter 6-1, 6-3. Visser (#5) dominated Kipp in the second set winning the match 6-3, 6-1. Ellis (#6) easily won her #6 singles 6-0, 6-0 versus Moore. 

The SU men tennis team also fared well in doubles.  Collison/Clarage (#2) won 8-5 and Sandoval/Bergerson (#3) narrowly won 9-7. After a long and hard fought match, McCready/Cornachione ultimately fell 7-9. 

In singles, the men scrapped very hard and it paid off.  Clarage (#1) lost 0-6, 2-6. Cornachione (#2) easily took care of Rhodes 6-1, 6-0. McCready (#3) fought hard to win 6-4, 1-6, 10-3 and so did Sandoval (#4) winning 6-1, 1-6, 12-10. Collison(#5) won an elongated match 7-5, 7-5 versus Philips while Rojas (#6) easily took the second set of his #6 singles match 7-5, 6-1 versus Williams.

Once again, the SU women came out to compete as they easily beat the LeTourneau Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

Blake and Ellis (#1), Hunt and Stofer (#2), and Johnson and Visser (#3) all quickly and easily defeated their opponents in doubles with the top two pairs only giving up one game and the third pair only giving up three.

The Lady Bucs also dominated in singles. Blake (#1) won a hard fought match against Case that was ultimately decided with a tie breaker (4-6, 7-5, 10-8). Hunt (#2) dominated Spencer by not dropping set 6-0, 6-0 and Stofer beat May 6-4, 6-3. Krampitz (#4) also won in tiebreaker against Bonina. Visser (#5) defeated Cohen (6-0, 6-2) and Ellis (#6) did not lose a game against Zhang (6-0, 6-0).

The SU men's team was unfortunately not as successful. Cornachione/McCready (#1) lost 8-4 to Cantu and Beaty. Collison/Clarage (#2) were easily defeated by Beggs/Johnsgaard and Sandoval/Bergerson (#3) were beaten by Bailey and McLaughin.

The bad luck continued for the men in singles. Clarage (#1) was defeated (0-6, 0-6) and Cornachione (#2) was defeated by Beaty (2-6, 3-6). McCready (#3) played a tough second set but still lost 0-6, 5-7 to Beggs. Sandoval (#4) lost to Jonsgaard 0-6, 3-6. Collison (#5) fell 4-6, 2-6 to Bailey. Rojas fought hard in the second set for a set tiebreaker but still lost to McLaughlin (1-6, 6-7).

The Bucs will be back in action at home against the UT Tyler Patriots on Saturday, March 2nd. The men play at 10, the women at 2.
