Tennis Ends Fall Season with Big Wins

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Southwestern men's and women's tennis teams closed out the fall season with a pair of wins over Howard Payne University over the weekend.

With a big crop of first-year athletes, the men's team nearly ran the table on the Yellow Jackets, winning 8-1. Southwestern swept doubles play with Jonathan Sandoval and Alec Bergerson logging the largest win, an 8-2 decision over Samuel/Harding.

Bergerson continued his dominate play into singles action, winning 6-2, 6-1 while Omeed Azmoudeh did one better with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Crunelle in #6 singles. Sandoval edged out Rodriquez in the tie breaker 10-8 while Sam McCready won 10-6 in the tie breaker to give Southwestern their eighth match win.

On the women's side, Southwestern and HPU split doubles play and after an HPU forfeit in the third match the Pirates headed into singles play up 2-1.

Gabby Hunt started things off well for SU, winning 6-3, 6-1 in #1 singles while Elizabeth Ellis bulldozed the competition in #2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3. Marieke Visser edged out Guerrero in #3 singles, winning the tie breaker 11-9.

After Sharon Saltoon fell 6-3, 6-4 in #4 singles and Raina Musso dropped the #5 singles 4-6, 6-3, 11-9, an HPU forfeit closed out the match and handed the Pirates the 6-3 win.

The two teams head into the off-season and resume action on February 8-9 at the UMHB Invitational Tournament in Belton, Texas.
