Hartsell Leads Pirates After Second Day of SCAC Championships

THE COLONY, Texas - The Southwestern University women's swimming team saw three school records fall as they sit in third place after the second day of the 2018 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Lewisville Aquatic Center.

Trinity extended its lead to 372 while Colorado College moved into second at 275. Southwestern sits third with 222 points while McMurry and Centenary round out the top five.

Southwestern wasted little time as they started the meet with a bang in prelims as freshman Kate Russell hit a new school mark in the 500 free with a time of 5:15.31. She would eventually earn a fourth place finish in the finals at 5:18.97.

In the pool, freshman set a new school mark in the 200 IM final with a time of 2:08.45, blowing the competition away and earning gold as she won by over three seconds.

Southwestern also set a new school record in the 200 free relay as the team of junior Cara Chin, Hartsell, freshman Breely Peterson, and junior Erika Dubros finished with a time of 1:37.86, good for third place in the event. Chin would also place fourth in the 50 free at 24.54.

It'll be a busy Friday for the Pirates with six events on tap including the 400 IM, the 100 fly, the 200 free, the 100 breast, the 100 back, and the 400 medley relay. Prelims begin at 10 AM with finals taking place at 6 PM.
