Pirates take down records on day one of SCAC Championships

ROCKWALL, Texas – Day one of the SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships saw the Southwestern University men's and women's take down two school records en route to pushing the league's top teams as the Pirate men sit in second while the women finished Wednesday in fourth.

On the men's side the Pirates recorded three top five finishes including a runner-up finish in the 200-yard medley relay setting a school record. Ty Lapinski, Kyler Wood, Shelby Hall and Hector Posadas finished just behind the quartet from Trinity with a time of 1:34.76 while the Tigers posted a time of 1:33.54.

The 800-yard men's freestyle relay came in fourth as Sam Visser finished fourth as well, scoring points for the Pirates. Visser finished with 223.45 points as Colorado College's Austin Howlett took home first place honors.

In the team scoring, Southwestern finished day one with 87 points as Trinity leads the men's competition with 119 points. On the women's side the Pirates closed out Wednesday in fourth behind Colorado College and Trinity in the top two spots separated by just two points. Southwestern totaled 56 points and is just four points behind UC-Santa Cruz in third place.

The women's relays saw the Pirates break the school's record in the 200-yard medley relay while earning two top five finishes. Madison Doty, Emily Haskell, Kenly Gaynor and Blythe Nava narrowly missed winning the event by less than a second with runner-up time of 1:48.84 as Colorado College placed a winning time of 1:48.50.

The Pirate women's second top five finish came in the 800-yard freestyle relay as Emmy Gradisar, Sandy de Haas, Sarah Alpini and Alex Morris narrowly missed a school record as well.

Day two will kick off with the prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals action starting at 5 p.m.
