Swimmers dominate at home vs. Centenary

GEORGETOWN – The Southwestern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the pool Saturday to take wins over Centenary inside Walzel Natatorium.

The Pirate men took a 137-95 win while the women held off Centenary for a 123-108 victory.

On the men's side, eight Pirates placed first while the women recorded seven first place finishes.

Kyler Wood won both the non-traditional 100-yard breaststroke and 50-yard breaststroke as Sam Visser and Hector Posadas gave Southwestern a 1, 2, 3 finish in the 50. Wood finished with a time of 59.53 in the 100 as he was the only swimmer under the one minute mark.

Evan Jones also earned two first place finishes with his first coming in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.76, which was just ahead of teammate Simon Gersib. Jones saw to a time of 4:59.95 to win the 500-yard freestyle as well finishing ahead of teammate Oliver Sale who came in second.

The Pirate men also earned one, two, three finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. Shelby Hall led the attack in the 200 followed by Ty Lapinski and Mason Lundy as Simmon Belaineh paced the way in the 100. Belaineh was followed by Hector Posadas and Lundy to round out the top three.

On the women's side Emma Florence won both the 1-meter diving competition and the 3-meter. Florence finished with a final score of 183.82, placing her ahead of teammates Abby Miller and Andrea Bruti who finished with 171.00 and 147.60 points respectively in the 3-meters.

Madison Doty took home another first place finish in the 100-yard Individual Medley as the Pirates also placed second and third with Mara Weidmann and Kenly Gaynor following the first-year swimmer.

Southwestern also earned a one, two, three finish in the non-traditional 50-yard breastroke on the women's side as well led by Emily Haskell. Haskell finished with a time of 32.64 and was followed by Weidmann and Sarah Hachar.

The Pirates close out the home portion of their schedule next Saturday hosting NCAA Division II UT-Permian Basin. The scheduled start time from Walzel Natatorium was changed to a 1 p.m. start.
