GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University softball team split a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Trinity University Tigers this Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 – Southwestern 5, Trinity 4

Trinity started the top of the inning by scoring the first run of the game. In the bottom of the first, the Pirates quickly answered back as Maddie Mefford tripled by slugging the ball to right-center, giving her two RBI's and the Pirates a 2-1 lead. In the next two innings, both the Tigers would go scoreless as Southwestern's Kinly McCaffrey threw three of her seven strikeouts to hold off Trinity.

In the top of the fourth, the Tigers right fielder doubled and hit in two runners, giving the Tigers the lead again. However, Kathryn Dull answered Trinity by hitting in Brooke Yanta to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth inning, the Tigers scored a run to gain the lead, but Jessey Nunez singled, which allowed Mefford to score a run to tie the game. In the sixth inning, both teams kept each other from scoring. Going into the top of the seventh, Trinity came close to scoring a much-needed run to try and pull ahead. The Pirates held the Tigers off to give the Pirates a chance to take the bottom of the seventh. As the Pirates came up to bat, Southwestern was able to load the bases, so when Nunez came up to bat, she singled to the Tiger's second baseman, who then threw it to the catcher. But off of the Tiger's catcher's error, Kaylee White scored the final run to end the game 5-4 with a Pirate win.

Game 2 – Trinity 3, Southwestern 1

In the second game, Trinity once again was the first to score a run as their first baseman singled to right-center and earning an RBI. Southwestern did not answer back until the bottom of the second when Nunez singled and Tori Montemayor scored from running off second base to tie the game 1-1. This score would stay the same all the way up into the top of the seventh inning when Trinity's Marina Delaluna hit a home run to have her and her teammate score and gain the lead over the Pirates. Southwestern tried to get back into the game with one inning left, but Trinity's defense held them off and the game ended 3-1.

The Southwestern Pirates softball team is now 8-9 in SCAC play and 11-17 overall. The Pirates will finish their series against Trinity in their final game tomorrow, Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. on Taylor Sanders Field.
