Softball Shuts Out Dallas to Win Game 1

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates softball team got another complete-game shutout victory from pitcher Lindsey Longuet, defeating the University of Dallas Crusader 4-0.

Longuet surrendered just three hits over seven innings with just one walk, striking out five to add to her conference-leading total. The Pirate defense retired the side in order in four of the seven innings as Longuet improved to 13-2 on the season.

The Pirates' offense did the bulk of its damage in the bottom of the third inning, getting ahead of pitches and pulling them down the left side. Andrea Hern got things started with a one-out double down the left field line. Tori Montemayor followed by finding the gap between third base and shortstop, putting runners on the corners.

Jordan Farber laid down a perfectly placed bunt between the pitcher and third baseman, leading to a moment's indecisiveness by the Dallas defense, buying enough time for Hern to score and Farber to reach on the infield single.

Kaitlynn Copher reached on a fielder's choice when Dallas starting pitcher Karina Campo fielded a grounder and unsuccessfully tried to throw Montemayor—who got a great jump off second—out at third; loading the bases.

Katie Bricarell hit a two-RBI single to left center, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

Dallas challenged in the top of fourth, loading the bases with one out with a leadoff single, hit batter, and single to left field. Longuet recovered to induce two pop outs to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Pirates added an insurance run with Bricarell lifting the ball to deep center Liz Cordova dropping it as her momentum carried her just shy of the fence, scoring Copher for a 4-0 lead. Longuet retired the last nine hitters in order to end the game.

Bricarell finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and Montemayor hit 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Pirates finished 7-for-26 as a team, with three RBI and six runners left on base. With the win, Southwestern improved to 30-4 on the season and 15-3 in conference.
