Softball Shuts Down​ Centenary in Friday's Doubleheader
SHREVEPORT, La. – The Pirates came out on top over the Ladies in the first two games of the Southwestern and Centenary softball series in a 5-2  and 7-6 victory. 
 
With the Pirates starting the top of the first inning, Katie Bricarell's sacrifice fly allowed Celeste Silvas to get the first run in the game. Jordan Farber then also had an RBI with Kylie Nixon to score the second run for the Pirates, letting them take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Ladies answered back by scoring a run in the second; however, in the top of the third, the Pirates would score three runs to gain a lead that Centenary was unable to answer.  With one final run made by the Ladies in the fifth, both teams would remain scoreless ending the game in the top of the seventh 5-2. 
 
Pitcher Lindsey Longuet held the Ladies to two runs and threw five strikes outs for the Pirates. Bricarell also tacked on two RBI's in the first game. 
 
Going into the second game, the Ladies kept the game neck and neck by using the Pirates defensive plays to their advantage. While Maddie Mefford scored two RBI's in the first, Centenary answered back with three runs to give them the lead in the game. 
 
The second inning stayed scoreless with both team defenses picking up the routine fly balls. In the third, the Pirates were able to add four more runs making the game 6-3 with Katelyn Francis scoring two RBI's with the bases loaded. Once again, the Ladies fought back to get on the bases and scored three runs in the third to tie the game 6-6. 
 
With the game tied up, the Pirates and Ladies fought to get the lead. While the fourth inning remained scoreless for both teams, Southwestern's freshman Kylie Nixon singled to left field giving Francis the time to run the third and then to home base, giving the Pirates the seventh and final run for the game. With the Ladies unable to score, thePirates took the second win 7-6. 
 
Highlighted players include Copher who scored two runs for the Pirates and Mefford with three RBIs and Francis with two RBIs. 
 
The Pirates continue the rest of the four-game series against Centenary on Saturday, March 30, at 12 and 2 p.m.
