Softball Takes Final Game of Series Against TLU

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Southwestern University Pirates got a gritty performance from starting pitcher Bailey Meyer and production from the top of its lineup to defeat the Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Bulldogs 6-4, avoiding a series sweep.

Meyer went the distance in the pitcher's circle, shaking off an early three-run blast to strikeout five, giving up four earned runs on six hits with two walks.

Leadoff hitter Sydney Scott hit 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored and the second and third spots, Celeste Silvas and Kaitlynn Copher, each had a RBI.

Texas Lutheran struck first with a two-out, three-run home run from Cassy Roche in the top of the second. It was Roche's second home run of the day after hitting a solo shot in the previous game.

Southwestern responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three walks and an error that scored Kylie Nixon and Maddie Mefford. Scott followed with a RBI-single to left-center and Silvas laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Andrea Hern, giving the Pirates a 4-3 lead.

An error cost the Pirates a run in the top of the third, putting a runner in scoring position and scoring on a Chassety Raines sacrifice fly to right field. Southwestern regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, getting a double to right-center from Mefford, who scored on Tori Montemayor's single up the middle.

The Pirates added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth with a Copher RBI infield single, scoring Scott, who reach with a single to left, stole second, and advanced on a Silvas groundout.

Texas Lutheran scored on a two-out, RBI-triple from Padilla with the wind carrying the ball out of Montemayor's range in right field. Meyer induced a pop-out to Hern at third base to end the game.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 7-3 and 1-3 in conference play. Southwestern will stay at home, hosting Schreiner for a four-game series with the first doubleheader starting on Friday, March 8 at 5:00 p.m. and the second day on March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
