Pirates Can't Avoid Sweep to No. 2 Texas Lutheran

GEORGETOWN - The No. 2 ranked Texas Lutheran Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Southwestern University softball team on Saturday afternoon as they dropped their home doubleheader to the Bulldogs by the score of 4-0 and 16-6 (5) at Taylor-Sanders Field.

In game one, sophomore Lindsey Longuet put together a nice effort, but could not out duel Maitlin Raycroft as she shutout the Pirates, holding the high-powered offense to only three hits while TLU got a run in the third, a run in the fifth, and two runs in the seventh to pull away and win 4-0.

Senior Taylor Curtis, junior Celeste Silvas, and sophomore Kaitlynn Copher had the lone hits for the Pirates while Longuet went all seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out five.

In game two, TLU got a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first. However, Southwestern got a solo shot from sophomore Sydney Scott followed by RBIs from Curtis and sophomore Andrea Hern to take a 3-2 lead.

The Pirates pushed the lead to 4-2 in the second on a RBI single from Grace Phelps.

The Bulldogs plated five in the third thanks in part to a grand slam to move ahead 7-4, but Southwestern got two more back in the third thanks to RBI walks by Silvas and Phelps. However, a nine run fourth by TLU put the game away for good, giving them the 16-6 win.

Phelps was 1-for-1 with two RBI, a run scored, and three walks while Hern was 1-for-1 with a RBI, walk, and run scored. Curtis, Scott, and Silvas all had a hit and a RBI. Four different pitchers took the circle with sophomore Bailey Meyer taking the loss. Junior Isabella Robb saw the most success, going an inning and allowing no runs or hits.

The Pirates moves to 17-14 and 6-10 in the SCAC. They will conclude the regular season next weekend as they head to Irving for a four game series against the University of Dallas. First pitch of a DH is scheduled for 12 PM on Saturday.
