Softball SCAC Splits Series with Centenary

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University softball team split their finale with Centenary on Sunday afternoon, winning game one 9-0 (5) before dropping the finale 3-2 to split the SCAC series at two games a piece.

A three run first inning to go with a six run third as well as a combined one hitter from sophomores Lindsey Longuet and Bailey Meyer gave the Pirates a commanding 9-0 win. Freshman Grace Phelps had a monster contest, going 2-for-3 with five RBIs including a two-run homerun in the first and a bases clearing three RBI double in the third.

Sophomore Kaitlynn Copher was 2-for-3 with two runs scored including a double and a solo shot in the third while senior Taylor Curtis was 2-for-2 with a RBI and run scored. Sophomore Andrea Hern was 2-for-3 while sophomore Sydney Scott was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Longuet pitched three innings, allowing only one hit and getting her second win of the season, while Meyer pitched two complete and struck out four.

In the second game, a Scott homerun in the fourth tied the contest at two, but Centenary got a seventh inning go-ahead homer from Hallie Smith to take a 3-2 lead and ultimately split the series.

The Pirate bats were slowed in game two, only coming away with four hits. Scott was 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs scores, and a RBI while Copher was 1-for-3 with a RBI.

In her longest outing of the 2018 season, Longuet (2-1) earned her first loss of the season, going seven complete while only allowing one earned run on six hits to go with six strikeouts.

Southwestern goes to 13-9 overall and moves to 3-5 in SCAC play. They return to action this Saturday as they welcome in Austin College for a four game series beginning with a doubleheader at 1 PM.
