Pirates Open Series with Split Against Centenary

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University softball team opened their SCAC four game series with a split on Saturday afternoon at Taylor-Sanders Field, dropping the first game 8-3 before firing back for a 13-1 (5) win. 

In the first game, Centenary used an unbelievable three double, four RBI day from Anna Dunn to earn an 8-3 win over the Pirates. The Ladies scored two in the first, two in the second, two in the third, and two in the sixth while holding the Pirates offense in check thanks to a solid outing from Nichole Aldridge (W, 3-4) for the win.

Four pitchers took the circle for the Pirates as sophomore Nadia Netek (L, 4-3) did not last through 1.2 innings while sophomore Brooke Tomalty pitched 0.2 innings. Sophomore Lindsey Longuet made her 2018 debut, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out four while only allowing one hit. Freshman Tori Montemayor pitched the final two innings.

Senior Taylor Curtis finished 2-for-4 while freshman Grace Phelps was 1-for-2 with a home run. Sophomore Kaitlynn Copher had a RBI on a sac fly in the game.

In game two, Centenary took the early lead on a solo shot from Dunn, but Southwestern dominated from there, scoring six runs in the first and five in the third en route to a 13-1 victory. Copher and freshman Katelyn Francis drove runs in to make it a 2-1 while a Centenary error with the bases loaded score two more. Sophomore McKenna Zinke pushed the lead to 6-1 with a two RBI double to left center.

Francis added her second RBI of the day in the second while Zinke and sophomore Sydney Scott drove runs in in the third while junior Celeste Silvas had a two RBI single. Zinke upped her RBI total to three in the fourth to make it a 13-1 ballgame.

The duo of sophomore Bailey Meyer and Longuet combined to shut down the Ladies. Meyer went 2.1 innings, allowing on run on three hits and striking out four while Longuet (W, 1-0) went 2.2 innings allowing no runs or hits and striking out three.

Zinke finished 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs to go with a run scored while sophomore Mary Alex Krosby was 2-for-2 with a triple and three runs scored. Silvas was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored while sophomore Andrea Hern went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Francis was 1-for-2 with two RBIs while Copher was 1-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Scott was 1-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Southwestern ups their record to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in SCAC play. They will finish the series with the Ladies tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 PM.
