Pirates Drop Twin Bill to Schreiner in SCAC Opener

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Southwestern University softball team dropped their first two SCAC contests on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Schreiner Mountaineers on the road by the score of 4-2 and 4-3.

In the first contest, Hannah Ortiz (6-0) spun a gem for the Mountaineers, keeping the Pirates in check for most of the game as Schreiner got a big four run third for a 4-0 lead after three complete. 

With two on in the sixth, freshman Grace Phelps tripled to right field, scoring two, and cutting the deficit in half at 4-2. However, Ortiz finished the Pirates off and earned a complete game for the game one victory.

Phelps was the standout, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and two RBIs while sophomore Mary Alex Krosby was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Junior Celeste Silvas also scored a run in the contest. Sophomore Bailey Meyer (6-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits to go with three strikeouts, but six walks.

Ortiz pitching a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three. Rachel Brown led Schreiner, going 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

It was a much different start in game two as Southwestern scored two in the first off RBIs from Phelps and sophomore Katie Bricarell for the early lead. Schreiner got one back in the bottom half of the first to make it a 2-1 game.

Southwestern held the 2-1 lead for the majority of the game until a RBI in the fifth by the Mountaineers evened the game at two.

Freshman Katelyn Francis answered in the top half of the sixth with one down and runner on, singling home Andrea Hern to put the Pirates ahead 3-2. However, Schreiner responded with two runs in the sixth thanks to a Pirate errors and got a 1-2-3 top seventh to stun the Pirates with a 4-3 victory in game two.

Sophomore Nadia Netek (2-2) took the loss despite a fine outing, pitching six complete and allowing no earned runs on five hits to go with three strikeouts. Frances was 3-for-3 with a double and a RBI while sophomore Sydney Scott and Silvas were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Jessica Vrana (3-0) earned the win in the circle while Gabriela Acuna was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Southwestern moves to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in SCAC play. They will look to bounce back and split the series tomorrow as they take on the Mountaineers in a doubleheader beginning at 12 PM.
