Pirates Sweep Past Our Lady of the Lake

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University softball team earned a two game sweep over Our Lady of the Lake on Saturday afternoon at Taylor-Saunder Field, defeating the Saints 6-1 and 8-3 including a rare triple play in game two.

After a quick first by sophomore starter Bailey Meyer, the Pirates exploded for four runs in the first inning. After a pair of runners reached, sophomore Kaitlynn Copher belted a double for the early 1-0 lead. One batter later, senior Taylor Curtis singled home two more with two away to extend the lead to 3-0.

Southwestern was not done yet. After Curtis stole second, sophomore Andrea Hern singled her home to make it a 4-0 game.

The Pirates rode the arm of Meyer (3-2) as she ended up throwing a complete game, allowing one run on six hits. Her one run did not come until the final inning.

Southwestern added insurance runs in the sixth thanks to the bat of sophomore Sydney Scott, who tripled to left center, driving two in and extending the lead to 6-0 at the time.

Scott finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI, and a run scored while Curtis finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

In the second game, the Saints threatened to take the early lead as they got a pair of runners in scoring position with one away, but sophomore Nadia Netek got a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning with no damage done.

The Pirates would strike in the second inning as sophomores Katie Bricarell and Mary Alex Krosby each drove in a run for a 2-0 lead.

OLLU tied the game with a run in the third and fourth inning, but Southwestern took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning  as Curtis drove a run in followed by a two RBI double by freshman Katelyn Francis

Copher put an exclamation point on the offensive outburst as she stepped to the plate and belted one over the fence to make it a 7-2 game.

In the sixth inning with a run already home, the Saints looked to cut into the 7-3 deficit with runners on first and second and nobody out. However, a line shot hit to right turned into a spectacular running catch by Scott. Noticing the runners had come to far off the base, Scott fired to second for the second out while Celeste Silvas fired to first to complete a triple play.

A RBI double from Scott in the following inning put the game away for good as the Pirates earned the two game sweep, 8-3.

Natek (1-1) pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on nine hits to go with three strikeouts.

Copher finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, and two RBIs. Krosby added a 2-for-2 day with a RBI while Francis was 2-for-3 wiht a double and two RBIs. Scott and freshman Grace Phelps also had a double each.

Southwestern moves back to .500 at 4-4 and will return to action on Tuesday as they head into Austin to take on Concordia (TX) in a doubleheader beginnning at 5 PM.
