Meyer Spins Gem as Pirates Earn Split at UMHB

BELTON, Texas - Sophomore pitcher Bailey Meyer threw a complete game while striking out 11 batters while sophomore Sydney Scott hit two total home runs as the Southwestern University softball team earned a split at Mary Hardin-Baylor on a damp, cold Tuesday evening.

After dropping the first contest 9-1 (6), Southwestern used a two out rally to jump out to an early lead. After two quick outs, freshman Grace Phelps singled followed by an error by the UMHB defense. Sophomore Izzy Jack doubled home a run followed by back-to-back RBI singles by senior Taylor Curtis and sophomore Andrea Hern for a 3-0 lead.

Meyer was in the zone from the start, striking out five of the first seven batters she faced to keep the Pirates ahead.

UMHB threatened in the bottom of the third, and looked as though they were going to get on the board with runners on first and second thanks to a single by Emily Bounds, but Curtis came up throwing and gunned down Avery Kelly at the plate. UMHB loaded the bases with two outs, but Meyer got a huge strikeout to keep the lead at three.

Southwestern extended their lead as Scott stepped to the plate in the fourth as belted a solo shot to center field for a 4-0 lead.

The Cru finally got on the board in the sixth inning on a pair of RBIs to cut the deficit in half at 4-2, but Meyer regained her composure and kept the Pirates out in front going into the final inning. UMHB would bring the winning run to the plate, but Meyer got the ground out back to her to end the game and earn the road win.

Meyer (2-1) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs off five hits while striking out 11. She did walk six batters, but was able to overcome it.

Scott finished 2-for-4 with the solo blast and a run scored while Curtis was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Phelps, Jack, and sophomore Kaitlynn Copher all went 1-for-4 with a run scored while Jack and Hern drove in a run. Southwestern finished with 10 hits in the contest.

Karen Tennis (1-1) took the loss for the Cru as they were led by Kasi Cummings as the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double and a RBI.

In the first game, Scott led it off with a solo shot to right for the 1-0 lead, but UMHB responded with a six run second inning and took advantage of five Southwestern errors for a 9-1 win in six innings.

Phelps finished 2-for-3 in the contest while Scott, Copher, and junior Celeste Silvas each went 1-for-3. Meyer got the start in the first game, taking the loss in 1.1 innings of work as she responded nicely after a tough first game. Sophomore Nadia Netek had a nice relief showing, allowing only one hit and an unearned run while freshman Lexi Shafer also got work in.

CeCe Darilek (1-0) earned the win for UMHB while Devon Walker went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

The Pirates move to 2-2 on the young season and will be back in action tomorrow for their home opener at Taylor-Saunders Field. Southwestern welcomes in No. 3 Texas-Tyler with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 12 PM.
