Late innings cost Pirates against #18 UH Victoria

The University of Houston-Victoria scored 13 combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings of today's double-header to hand Southwestern two losses on Tuesday.

UH Victoria scored one run in the first, but Southwestern tied the game in the third on Berkeley Bacons single to left center, driving home Michele Ramos.

Southwestern took the lead in the sixth after Stacy Rosengren's one-out double and was brought home by Caroline Young's single to center field.

The Pirates found themselves in a jam in the bottom of the sixth as the Jaguars loaded the bases and brought a run home on an SU error to tie the game again 2-2. UHV would rattle off six runs in the inning to steal the game one victory 7-2.

Game two saw the Pirates score first with one run in the third, but the Jaguars posted two in response to lead through three. Southwestern got hot offensively in the fourth, scoring four runs and added two more in the fifth and one in the sixth to lead 8-2.

UHV got back to work and pushed three across in the sixth and held the Pirates scoreless in the seventh. The Jaguars did exactly what they needed to do in the seventh and scored four runs on five hits to steal the win from the grasp of Southwestern.

Rosengren led Southwestern at the plate, going 3-6 on the afternoon with two runs and three RBIs. Ally Holland went 2-4 with two runs. Alyssa Novander garnered the loss in game one and Cozette Palmer in game two. Palmer threw 11.1 innings, allowing 16 hits, nine runs, four earned, while walking 12 and striking out three.

SU falls to 1-7 on the year while UHV improves to 11-4. The Pirates return home to face Calumet College on Sunday for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
