Softball falls in home opener

Hardin-Simmons posted big innings in each game to hand Southwestern a pair of losses on Tuesday as the Pirates opened at home.

Hardin-Simmons jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the top of the first just before SU made the third out of the inning. The Cowgirls added two more in the third and led 3-0.

Southwestern was able to cut into the lead as Michele Ramos' deep sacrifice fly to left field brought in Caroline Young who reached on a leadoff double to center field in the bottom of the fourth.

With one swing of the bat with two strikes, LeLeux put Hardin-Simmons on top by four with a two-run home run to left field.

Ashleigh Scott opened the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff single and Linsay Biggers followed with a bunt single to put runners at first and second for Berkeley Bacon. Bacon hit a shot off the center field fence to bring home Scott and Biggers. Rosengren kept the one-out rally alive with a drive down the left line to bring home Bacon and pull the Pirates within one, 5-4.

Williams crushed the ball with bases loaded over the fence in right center to give HSU some breathing room 9-5 in the top of the sixth. Southwestern got one back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Rosengren to drive home Oorlog, putting the count at 9-5.

Ramos led at the plate in game one, going 2-2 with one RBI. Cozette Palmer garnered the loss on the mound to fall to 0-2 on the year.

Southwestern jumped on the board in the first inning of game two to take an early 2-0 lead. SU was able to get out of jams defensively and held HSU scoreless until the third inning when the Cowgirls pushed one run across to cut the lead to 2-1.

A five run fifth inning followed by a six run sixth gave Hardin-Simmons the 12-3 run-rule win in the sixth.

Six Pirates posted one hit each while Bacon, Rosengren and Bonilla drove in runs. Alyssa Novander garnered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year, allowing five runs on four hits with two walks.

Southwestern starts the year at 0-4 and returns to the road to face another tough ASC opponent in Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday in Belton at 1pm.
