Galloway, Ramirez hit for cycle in pair of wins

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Tessa Galloway and Karen Ramirez both hit for the cycle as Southwestern posted 10-2 and 10-6 wins over Austin College on Saturday.

A lofty fly ball got caught in the wind and drifted over the fence in centerfield to give Austin College a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. A big two-out triple from Tessa Galloway put SU in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning, but Stacy Rosengren lost the battle at the plate after working to a full count and fighting off numerous pitches, grounding out to Miller to end the inning.

Three straight infield singles from Ashleigh Scott, Marissa Irvin and Michele Ramos loaded the bases with no outs in the second, seeming to spell doom for the 'Roos, but the Pirates were unable to capitalize as AC got the lead runner at home each time to escape the jam unscathed.

Caroline Young brought home the first run of the game for the Pirates, driving home Galloway with a single up the middle in the third to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

With one swing of the bat Galloway grabbed the lead for the Pirates, taking the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a grand slam to put SU up 5-2 in the fourth with two outs. Michele Ramos continued the two-out rally, clearing the loaded bases later in the inning with a shot down the third base line, inches inside the line to extend SU's lead to six, 8-2.

The Pirates closed out the 10-2 run-rule win the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs.

Galloway was huge in game one, going 3-4 from the plate with four RBIs and three runs scored. Caroline Young and Michele Ramos were perfect at the plate going 4-4 and 2-2 respectively with Ramos bringing home three runs and Young two.

Gibbs earned the win after the rocky start, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three and walking none.

Southwestern struck first in game two as Galloway was brought home on Rosengren's two-out double to right center in the first. Biggers legged out an infield single, bringing home Irvin in the process and Karen Ramirez added an RBI triple to score Biggers to put SU up 3-0 through two.

In the top of the third the 'Roos cut into their deficit, posting two runs on a hard hit ball to Young at first to score two and put Southwestern's lead to 3-2.

Galloway led off the third with a double to complete the cycle on the day and was brought home on a sacrifice fly from Rosengren and Ramos brought home Young to give Southwestern a 5-2 lead through three.

A solo homerun by Sophia Hernandez in the top of the fifth and three 'Roo runs in the sixth cut the Pirate's lead to one, 7-6. Ramirez hit a bomb to centerfield to give Southwestern a 9-6 lead with a two-run homerun to complete the cycle on the day and SU added one more run before handling Austin College in the seventh to close out the game for a 10-6 win.

Galloway was 4-4 in game two to end 7-8 on the day with six RBIs while Ramirez went 5-8 with three RBIs. Cozette Palmer earned the win while Gibbs picked up the save.

Southwestern improves to 13-14-1 on the year and 9-5 in the SCAC and solidifies a spot in the SCAC tournament while Austin College falls to 13-20 overall and 4-14 in conference play. The two teams face off once again on Sunday with a double header beginning at noon.
