Softball sweeps day one, day two cancelled

IRVING, Texas – Southwestern defeated the University of Dallas 6-3, 9-1 on Saturday afternoon and were unable to get the double-header in on Sunday due to rain as SCAC action nears its end.

In game one UD was first on the board, scoring one in the first and two in the third to take a surprising 3-0 lead over SU. Southwestern finally got their bats going in the fourth as Stacy Rosengren reached on an error and brought home Ashleigh Scott. Two more runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from Scott and Tessa Galloway brought the game even 3-3.

After scoreless sixth and seventh innings the game went into extra innings, a situation the Pirates are fully accustomed to this season. SU quickly took control as Scott opened the eighth with a single and scored on Galloway's double to left center. The Pirates scored two more in the inning and sat the Crusaders down in order in the bottom half of the inning to take the 6-3 win.

Galloway went 3-4 from the plate in game one with two RBI's to lead SU offensively while Cozette Palmer earned the win with an impressive 5.2 innings of work where she allowed no runs and no hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Southwestern rode the momentum into game two, scoring two runs in the first inning and steadily increasing their lead with three runs in the fourth and fifth. One run in the sixth and steady, stingy defense led the Pirates to the 9-1 run-rule win.

Caroline Young was dynamite at the plate, going 4-4 in game two while Michele Ramos went 3-4 and Christina Crandall 2-2. As a team, SU went 15-33 from the plate and allowed just five UD hits. Palmer again earned the win, her fifth of the season. In six innings she allowed one earned run on five hits while walking two and striking out seven.

Southwestern improves to 11-14-1 on the year and 7-5 in the SCAC with the pair of wins. That moves the Pirates into third place in the SCAC and one game ahead of Schreiner with two weekends to go. SU comes home for the final time this season to host a four game series against Austin College beginning on Saturday at 1 p.m. and continuing through Sunday.
