Pirates split Sunday home series

Pirates split Sunday home series

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Houston Victoria scored multiple runs early in both games, but the Pirates had a big comeback in game two to pull out a split, falling 6-0 in game one before taking game two 5-4.

After a strong first inning defensively, Southwestern fell behind in the second after an RBI single was followed with an error, allowing three Jaguar runs to score in the second. Holland singled to center field and pinch runner Huerta narrowly beat Ramos' throw home to add one more run to UHV's total in the fourth.

Southwestern's hitters made good contact, but starting pitcher Megan Carter and UHV's defense held the Pirates at bay the rest of the way as SU fell 6-0 in game one.

Tessa Galloway and Stacy Rosengren were the only Pirates to notch hits in the game while Alex Holland was 3-3 in game one for the Jaguars.

A solo homerun in the third inning kicked off a scoring spree for Houston-Victoria, resulting in a 3-0 lead as Southwestern's offensive struggles continued into game two.

Karen Ramirez brought around the first runs of the afternoon with a 2 RBI double to left center in the fourth and Ashleigh Scott traded places with Ramirez with an RBI double to right center, all with two outs to tie the game 4-4.

Scott continued her hot hitting in game two with an RBI double down the leftfield line in the bottom of the sixth to give SU their first lead of the game 5-4.

The Jaguars' leadoff in the ninth reached with a single up the middle and Kayla Irvin took the mound to close out the game. Irvin got the first batter she faced to pop out to Scott at third and the final two out on the ground to Scott to close the game for the 5-4 win.

Gibbs earned the win while Irvin got the save. Scott was perfect at the plate, going 4-4 with two RBIs.

Southwestern moves to 3-7 after the split. They return to the road to face Concordia on Tuesday night in Round Rock. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
