Softball Takes on Host Patriots in NCAA Regional

Southwestern, which is the No.6 seed in the regional, stands at 34-11 on the season after winning the SCAC championship April 28 for the second time in the last four years. The Pirates beat league rival Trinity twice on the final day to win the SCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

Southwestern and UT Tyler have not met this season, but have faced-off seven times in previous years with the Patriots winning five of those contests. 

The Tyler, Texas regional will be a six team double-elimination regional and features five teams ranked in the current NFCA top-20. Texas-Tyler is the fifth-ranked team in the nation followed by sixth-ranked Linfield, 10th-ranked East Texas Baptist, 13th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and 18th-ranked Redlands (Calif.).

The remaining matchups in the Tyler Regional include Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champion and No. 2 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (32-11) taking on American Southwest Conference champion and No. 5 seed East Texas Baptist (34-10). The final matchup pairs No. 3 seed and Northwest Conference champion Linfield (36-6) against No. 4 seed and Pool C at-large recipient Redlands (Calif.) (34-10).

NCAA Regional play will run from May 9-13 with the winner of the Tyler Regional advancing to the finals, hosted by the Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The finals are scheduled for May 17-21 at the Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wis.

Forty-one conferences received automatic qualification (Pool A). Two institutions were selected from Pool B, which includes independent institutions and institutions from conferences that do not meet the automatic qualification criteria. The 19 remaining teams were selected on an at-large basis from automatic qualifying conferences and the remaining institutions in Pool B.
