Softball Sweeps Sunday Series Over Trinity

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern defeated Trinity 6-2 and 4-3 in the last two regular season games of the year.

TU's Sanchez reached on an error by the first baseman to lead off the game.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Armstrong and moved to third on a ground out by Dykes.  Then Russell reached on an error by the pitcher and scored Sanchez to take the 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 1st, Karen Ramirez hit a leadoff homerun to left center to tie the game at 1-1.

Michelle Ramos crushed a homer off the scoreboard in left field to take the lead in the 2ndAbigail O'Connor later hit a two out single to third and stole second base.  She scored on a single to right center by Ramirez to put the Pirates up 3-1. 

In the top of the 3rd, Sanchez hit a one out infield single and later stole second base.  Armstrong followed with a single to center to move Sanchez to third.  Then Sanchez scored on a ground out by Dykes.  A batter later, Russell singled to center field.  Ramos fielded the ball and threw a laser to the plate to get a sliding Armstrong out at home to preserve the 3-2 Southwestern lead.

In the bottom of the 4th, Ramirez drew a two out walk and later stole second.  Scott followed with a RBI single down the left field line to extend the lead to 4-2.

Linsay Biggers led off with a bunt single to the pitcher in the bottom of the 6th.  Then O'Connor reached on a fielder's choice bunt to the pitcher with Biggers safe at second.  Two runs scored on a rocket down the left field line for a double by Ramirez to go up 6-2 and seal the win.

Karen Ramirez led the offense by going 3-3, with 4 RBI, a home run, a double, a walk, stole a base and scored twice.  Kelsey Kingston got the complete game win, scattering 6 hits over 7 innings of work.

Ramirez led off game two for the Pirates with a single to right center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Scott.  Galloway followed with a RBI single down the left field line.  Then Irvin singled to give the Pirates runners on first and second.  SU loaded the bases with a single through the right side by Stacy Rosengren.  Bryant reached on a fielder's choice to the pitcher, as they opted to go for the out at the plate.  However, the catcher dropped the ball, allowing Galloway to score for the 2-0 lead.

Wellik took a lead off walk to begin the top of the 2nd.  She was picked off at first as O'Connor fired a dart to Rosengren who made the tag.  Pitcher Kayla Irvin struck out the second batter.  In a top 10 worthy play, Rush hit a sharp ball that bounced off of Scott's glove at third, straight into the mitt of the shortstop Ramirez, who collected herself and made a great throw to get the out at first. 

TU's Dykes drew a leadoff walk in the top of the 4th.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Russell.  Later with two outs, Kinlaw singled up the middle and Dykes scored to cut it to a 2-1 game.

In the bottom of the 4th, Bryant led off with a bloop single to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ramos.  O'Connor followed with a double over the head of the left fielder to bring home Bryant to go up 3-1. 

Fleischman was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the 5th.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice by Weyand.  Then Sanchez beat out an infield single to the left side, with Fleischman taking third.  Both runners scored on a single to left field by Dykes to tie the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the 7th, O'Connor led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ramirez.  Then Scott hit a ball off the wall in left center just out of reach of the diving left fielder.  The ball got stuck under the fence for a ground rule double and O'Connor scored the game winning run, 4-3.

The Pirates offense was led by Abigail O'Connor, who went 2-3 with a double, a RBI, and scored the game winning run.  Kayla Irvin pitched well in the complete game win, allowing only 6 hits and 3 runs in 7 innings of work.

Southwestern completes their regular season with a 30-10 overall record and went 13-3 in conference.  The team will compete in the SCAC Conference Tournament next weekend in Irving, Texas.
