Pirates Split Twin Bill with Concordia

Pirates Split Twin Bill with Concordia

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern used a big rally in the seventh inning to win 6-5 over Concordia in game one but couldn't get a rally going in game two to fall 8-4.

Concordia struck first with a run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Wallace, but Southwestern posted two runs in response in the bottom of the inning. After fouling off multiple pitches, Caroline Young found the perfect one and hit a rocket to left field to move Stacy Rosengren to third. A beautifully executed suicide bunt by Michele Ramos brought home Rosengren to even the score and a bloop single to right field by Biggers brought home Young to put SU up 2-1.

The Tornados threatened in the fifth with back to back singles with one out, but Kelsey Kingston struck out pinch hitter Lynn and got Moreno out on a slow roller to Ashleigh Scott at third for the final out of the inning.

SU added some insurance on a two-run homerun over the left field fence by Caroline Young, pushing the score to 4-1 through six.

Concordia made it interesting with two outs, getting runners on with six straight singles, bringing four home to take the lead 5-4 in the top of the seventh.

The Pirates made a run themselves starting with walks to Abigail O'Connor and Christina Crandall with one out, putting the tying run in scoring position. Tessa Galloway tied the score with a single to left field, bringing home O'Connor with two outs and Kayla Irvin put the icing on the cake with a single to right field to score the winning run.

Young had a huge game for the Pirates, going 3-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Tamara Belilove earned the win after coming in relief in the seventh.

Concordia rocketed out of the gates in game two, scoring four runs on three hits in the first inning. Southwestern scored one of their own in the bottom half to cut the Tornado lead to three, 4-1.

In the bottom of the third Southwestern pulled within one with one swing of the bat as Ashley Scott jacked a homerun to left center, driving in O'Connor, to bring the count to 4-3. CTX added two more runs in the fourth to increase their lead back to three, 6-3. SU could only muster one run in the fifth and Concordia added two more in the sixth to arrive at the 8-4 final.

Scott, Galloway and O'Connor all posted two hits in the loss. Tamara Belilove garnered the loss, her first of the season.

With the split, Southwestern moves to 4-2 on the year. They remain at home to face Hardin-Simmons University on Friday for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
