Softball Takes Two from Schreiner

Softball Takes Two from Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern rebounded from a tough season opener with a pair of dominating wins over Schreiner 10-0 and 11-1.

It took a little while for SU's offense to get going as they went two scoreless innings before scoring the first run of the game in the third. Karen Ramirez walked and then stole second and third to move into scoring position. With two outs Kayla Irvin finally brought Ramirez home with an RBI double to put the Pirates up 1-0.

Another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Abigail O'Connor gave Southwestern some cushion, but a huge seventh inning with nine hits resulting in eight runs really sealed the deal for the Pirates.

SU posted 16 hits in the win with O'Connor leading at the plate going 3-4 with 3 RBIs. Kelsey Kingston earned her first win on the mound, pitching seven innings and allowing five hits, no runs while striking out nine and walking zero.

The momentum from the big seventh inning spilled over into game two as Southwestern rocketed out of the gate for four runs in the first inning. Back-to-back-to-back doubles by Stacy Rosengren, Caroline Young and Michele Ramos led to the four-run first.

Schreiner answered with one run and after scoreless second and third innings the Pirates got back to work and added seven runs on five hits in the fourth to lead 11-1.

The Pirate defense closed out the game, allowing just three baserunners in the final two innings to the Mountaineers to close out the run-rule win.

Tamara Belilove earned the win, allowing one run on four hits while walking three and striking out eight. O'Connor was once again hot at the plate, going 2-2, as did Ramos.

The wins improve SU to 2-2 on the year while Schreiner starts out 0-2. The Pirates return home again on Tuesday to face Concordia Univeristy for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
