Mountaineers Steal One from Pirates

Mountaineers Steal One from Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas - After a dominating 7-1 win in game one the Pirates weren't able to get their bats going again as they fell 2-1 in game two to split action Friday with Schreiner University.

Schreiner may have struck first with an RBI single from Caesar in the top of the first, but after Amanda Ambrose reached on a walk Kaitlyn Pavlicek followed with a shot over the left field fence to put the Pirates up 2-1.

Southwestern added one more in the bottom of the fourth, scoring when Taylor Turpin reached safely after a drop at first base, scoring Kady Freshour who singled earlier in the inning.

The Pirates held Schreiner scoreless, getting out of jams with smart defensive plays and added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun from Tessa Galloway to left field, just to the left of the scoreboard to give Southwestern a 4-1 lead. An error by the Mountaineers allowed two more runs to score for SU and Kayla Irvin (pictured) drove in the fourth run of the inning on an RBI single to center, putting the count at 7-1 heading into the final frame.

Maus earned the complete game win, allowing just one run with two walks and six strikeouts. McGinnis garnered the loss for Schreiner. Freshour led going 2-2 with two runs scored in game one while Irvin went 2-3 with one RBI.

As game two got underway neither team was able to produce a run in the first inning, but the Pirates posted one run in the bottom of the second with heads-up base running by Karen Ramirez.

Starting pitcher Pavlicek was tough on the mound, throwing a no-hitter through three innings, but had it snapped by a leadoff double by Bouthot in the fourth. After a sacrifice bunt by Ambrose Schreiner seemed poised to score but the Pirates locked down and got the next two batters out while holding Bouthot at third.

At the top of the fifth with two outs the Mountaineers managed to push one across the plate, using a Pirate error to score after loading the bases, tying the game 1-1 through five and a half.

Riding the momentum of the inning prior, Schreiner opened the sixth with a double from Ambrose. Caesar's single up the middle advanced Ambrose to third while Caesar moved to second on the throw to third, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. A bloop single to left field by Kimmons brought home Ambrose to give the Mountaineers the go ahead run and send Southwestern into the bottom of the sixth trailing 2-1.

The Pirates weren't able to get anything going in the sixth or seventh offensively and fell 2-1 in game two.

Ashleigh Scott led offensively in game two, going 2-2 from the plate. Pavlicek garnered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Southwestern moves to 18-13 on the year after the split and return to SCAC conference action after a week off, facing the University of Dallas on Saturday, April 14th, opening a four game series beginning at 1 p.m.
