Softball Sweeps Hendrix on Senior Day

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Pirates celebrated Senior Day with a pair of wins against Hendrix College.  Southwestern won 5-2 and 8-0 receiving stellar performances from the honored guests of the afternoon.  The team and fans recognized seniors, Taylor Turpin, Lyndsy Maus, Kaitlyn Pavlicek, Amanda Ambrose and Lauren Zearfoss for their immeasurable contributions to the program in a ceremony following the games.

Taylor Turpin led off the game for the Pirates with an infield single to first base.  Amanda Ambrose followed with a double down the left field line to advance Turpin to third.  She scored on a play at the plate on a bunt by Haley Hughes for the early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Hughes hit a two out single to third base and later stole second.  Karen Ramirez hit a single down the right field line to score Hughes for the Pirates second run of the game.

Hendrix College got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning.  Burr hit a one out single through the left side.  Fires followed with a single of her own up the middle.  Burr stole third and later scored on a single to left field by Hubbard to make it a 2-1 game.

In the Pirates' half of the fourth, O'Connor beat out a single to the shortstop.  She advanced to second on a bloop single by Turpin with two outs.  Ambrose singled to left center to score O'Connor from second.  Kaitlyn Pavlicek followed with a single up the middle to bring home Turpin.  Then Hughes singled to left field to bring in Pavlicek to give the Pirates the 5-1 advantage. 

In the top of the fifth, Halbert singled up the middle with two outs.  Burr tripled to center field to score Halbert to cut it to a 5-2 lead.

Lyndsy Maus and the Pirate defense would keep the Warriors scoreless for the remainder of the game to hold on to the 5-2 win.

The Pirates were led by senior Taylor Turpin who went 3-4 and scored twice and Haley Hughes who went 2-4, had two RBI and scored.  Lyndsy Maus pitched a complete game and allowed only two runs on six hits for the win.

In game two of the afternoon, Turpin reached in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch to leadoff for the Pirates.  Ambrose followed with a single to right field to advance Turpin to second.  Ramirez singled to left center to drive in Turpin from second base to give the Pirates the jump on the Warriors 1-0.

Tessa Galloway doubled to left center with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.  Kady Freshour hit a RBI single to right center to add to the 'Bucs lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ambrose hit an inside the park homerun to right field with one out to give the Pirates the 3-0 lead. 

The Pirates really broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth.   Freshour, O'Connor, and Turpin hit consecutive singles with one out to load the bases for the Pirates.  Ambrose followed with a two RBI single up the middle.  Pavlicek hit a single up the middle of her own to score a run.  Next, Hughes hit a single to third to load the bases again for the 'Bucs.  Then Ramirez singled through the left side to bring in another run.  Ashleigh Scott singled up the middle to bring in the game's final run to end the game early. 

The offense clicked on all cylinders with every Pirate batter earning at least one hit on the day.  Senior Amanda Ambrose led all hitters by going 3-4, 3 RBI, 2 runs, including an exciting inside the park home run.

Senior pitchers Lyndsy Maus and Kaitlyn Pavlicek combined for a one hit shutout of Hendrix with Maus earning her second win on the day.

Southwestern is now 17-12 overall and 7-1 in conference while Hendrix is 9-11 overall and 0-4 in conference following the Sunday doubleheader.

The Pirates face Schreiner in a doubleheader at home on April 6th with the first game beginning at 1:00pm at Taylor-Sanders Field in Georgetown, Texas.
