Pirates' Bats Down Warriors

Pirates' Bats Down Warriors

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates blasted Hendrix for 28 total hits over two games as they swept their opening double header 6-3 and 8-7.

Hendrix recorded the first baserunner of the game on a single by Whitby in the top of the second and posted the first run of the game in the top of the third off a Pirate error. Southwestern's Tessa Galloway answered with a leadoff single and advanced to second on Karen Ramirez's sacrifice bunt. Abi O'Connor followed with a lofty fly ball over left field's head, but it was close enough to being caught to hold Galloway near second, preventing her from scoring. With two outs Amanda Ambrose (pictured) gave SU the lead on a single up the middle, driving in Galloway and O'Connor to put the Pirates up 2-1 after three.

O'Connor, with two outs and runners on first and second, battled in the box and took an outside pitch to right field after fouling off numerous others to drive in Asheligh Scott and push the Pirate's lead to two, 3-1, after four innings of play.
The run support gave Maus the extra confidence she needed as she became even stronger on the mound.
Southwestern posted a three-run fifth to take a five run lead. Ramirez laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home pinch runner Linsay Biggers and Galloway's double off the left field fence scored Scott. Galloway was brought home on Kady Freshour's bloop single to left to put SU up 6-1.

Hendrix began to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth, using two hits and a walk to score three runs with one out. Maus got out of the jam with a perfect curve ball that froze Whitby in the box for the third out of the inning. The rally brought the Warriors within three, 6-3, with an inning and a half to play.
Maus and the Pirate defense closed out the game with a three up, three down top of the seventh, securing the 6-3 game one victory.
Scott, Galloway and O'Connor all went 2-3 from the plate to lead the way for SU while Ambrose led with two RBI's. Catelyn Gibbs led in game one for the Warriors going 2-3 from the plate as well.

Maus earned the win, her seventh of the season, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out four.

After a three up, three down top of the inning to open game two Taylor Turpin laid down a bunt single to lead off the bottom half of the inning and stole second base to present the first threat of the game. A wild pitch moved Turpin to third with one out and another wild pitch allowed Turpin to score the first run of the game.
Southwestern busted the game open in the bottom of the second, batting around the order and scoring four runs on six hits to take a commanding 5-0 lead into the third.
Hendrix pushed two across in the third with two outs to close in on the Pirates. Larabee started things off with a double and was brought home on Halbert's double to left field. Burr's single to right center allowed Halbert to score and bring the Warriors within three, 5-2. Tamara Belilove came in relief of Maus and got Whitby to fly out to Turpin in center to end the inning.

Hendrix attempted to chip away at Southwestern's lead by scoring one in the fourth, but SU's bats came alive again to score two in the fifth and lead 7-3 heading into the top of the sixth.

Belilove just got stronger on the mound as the game went on, visibly gaining confidence with each out. Hendrix had one last fight in them, however, as they scored three runs on two hits, one walk and one Pirate error in the top of the seventh with one out. A heads up play by Scott got the lead runner and the second out of the inning, putting SU closer to closing out the contest. After a walk to pinch hitter Casteen, Maus came back in to finish what she started. A slow roller to the right side by Fires scored one more and tied the game 7-7.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Turpin calmly stepped to the plate and singled to right field to keep the game going. Ambrose, who had been on fire all day offensively delivered once again, blasting the ball to deep left field. Turpin was running on the pitch and scored easily to hand SU the 8-7 win.
Turpin and Ambrose both had monstrous games going 4-5. Ambrose recorded four RBI's and one run scored and Turpin scored four times. Maus earned the win to move to 8-7 on the year.
The Pirates improve to 15-12 overall and 5-1 in the SCAC after the day one sweep. Hendrix falls to 9-9 on the year and 0-2 in the conference. The teams face off again tomorrow for two games beginning at noon.
