Pirates Sink Third Win Over ETBU Tigers

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University women's soccer team came back in the second half with two goals to seal their third win of the season and continue their undefeated streak in a game against the East Texas Baptist University Tigers.

ETBU came out hot in the start of the game, firing the ball at Southwestern goalie Mary Cardone. After four saves by Cardone within the first 14 minutes of the game, ETBU's Ashleigh Rondon scored the first goal of the game. Cardone was still able to keep a clear head and save two more shots before the half.

Down in the first half of the game for the first time this season, the Pirates, instead of coming back flustered, came back with a new spark which lead to Hallie Rutherford sending a crisp pass to Maya Fuller, who was able to score the first goal of the game for the Pirates making the score 1-1.

The Pirates were able to take control of the ball and attack the Tigers defense without mercy.  With Southwestern taking the ball to the Tigers net, ETBU's Maddie Rea was steady defending her team's goal. However, a misplaced pass from the defense to Rea let Fuller once again score on Rea's tip-off of the ball to sink the second goal of the night, giving the Pirates the lead over ETBU.

With ETBU unable to answer Fuller's second goal, the Southwestern Pirates tacked on another win to their season and for the first-time in coach Linda Hamilton career at Southwestern, the team started a season 3-0.

Cardone had six saves out of seven shots, while Fuller scored her sixth career goal and for the first time scored two goals in one game.

Up next, the Pirates get ready for their first away game in Brownwood, Texas, facing the  Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets Tuesday at 4 p.m.
