After helping guide the Southwestern University Pirates women's soccer team to a 2-0 record to open the season, senior goalie Mary Cardone was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Defensive Player of the Week for week 1.
Cardone totaled 12 saves total in two shutout victories, defeating Sul Ross State and new conference opponent St. Thomas. Mary had eight saves in the Pirates' season opener against Sul Ross State and four against St. Thomas.
This is Cardone's fifth career defensive player of the week award, winning two in 2016 and two in 2018. Last seaon, Cardone was First Team All-SCAC and Second Team USC All-West Region.
Southwestern will resume play this weekend with a home match against East Texas Baptist University on Saturday, Sep. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
