Hat Trick Propels Women's Soccer To Victory Over JWU

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates women's soccer team scored a goal in the first 15 seconds of the match and never looked back, defeating the Johnson & Wales University (JWU) Wildcats 6-0.

Southwestern took the opening kick and immediately put JWU on its heels, tearing down the field with Lauren Lee emerging from a crowd in front of the net to find the back of it for the Pirates' quickest goal of the season.

It was the first goal of Lee's career but far from the last. The freshman from Sugar land, Texas finished with the hat trick, scoring three goals on five shots, scoring two of the Pirates' four first-half goals.

Hallie Rutherford scored eight minutes into the match on a beautiful pass from Maya Fuller and Ariel Mansholt closed out the half with Southwestern's fourth goal at the 42:37 mark.

The Pirates dictated the pace, overwhelming JWU with a 16 shots to just three attempts from the Wildcats and finished with a 22-8 advantage in shots. JWU goalie Katelyn Peters finished the half with seven saves.

Mary Cardone finished with three saves, all coming in the second half, and broke up several other plays before they could develop into a threat, earning her sixth shutout victory of the season.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 7-4 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. The Pirates drop to 6-5 on the season and 5-4 in conference play. Southwestern will resume play with a conference match on the road against Schreiner at 2:00 p.m.
