Women's Soccer Scores Shutout Victory Over Centenary College

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Southwestern University Pirates women's soccer team and Centenary College went shot-for-shot in the second half with the Pirates pulling away with a 1-0 victory on an Annie Ewton goal.

Both teams totaled nine shots in the second half with the Pirates outshooting Centenary 18-13 for the match. Ewton connected on an assist from Emily Schmalstieg at the 61:40 mark, scoring her second goal of the season to give the Pirates the win.

"It was an amazing feeling to come in and help my team," Ewton said. "Emily and I came in and got the job done. It's so cool to have a supportive team to back you up. We played a really hard-fought game against Centenary and I'm happy to see it fall in our favor!"

Goalie Mary Cardone had six saves for the Pirates. It was the sixth shutout of the season for Cardone, who has won two SCAC Defensive Player of the Week awards so far this season, totaling 60 saves with an .833 save percentage.

"It was a very hard fought game," Pirates Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. "It wasn't pretty but we're happy to get the three points on a tough road trip."

With the win, the Pirates improve to 6-4 on the season with a 4-2 record in conference play, where they stand second behind Trinity University. Southwestern will resume play on the road on Sunday, Oct. 7 against Texas Lutheran, hoping to avenge a 1-2 loss in their previous match.
