Cardone's Career Day Not Enough as Pirates Fall in PKs

SHREVEPORT, La. - Sophomore Mary Cardone matched a career-high with 14 saves on Friday afternoon against the homestanding Centenary Ladies, but it was not enough as the Southwestern University women's soccer team saw their season come to a close at the SCAC Championship Quarterfinals in a 0-0 draw with the Ladies advancing on PKs, 3-2.

It was a tough day for the Pirates in their attack as they were out shot 23-4 while the Ladies also held a 10-2 advnatge in corner kicks on their home field.

Despite the strong attack, Cardone kept the game scoreless all throughout the match, notching seven saves in the first half and six in the second while adding one more in extra time as the match moved into PKs..

The first two kickers for Centenary converted while the first two for Southwestern missed. The Pirates got one back in the third round of kicks while Centenary missed on their next two. 

After a Southwestern miss on the fourth kick, Angelica Grayson evened it up at two on the fifth kick, but Centenary advanced as Pamela Fonseca converted to move onto the SCAC Semifinals.

Cardone had 14 saves on September 30th, 2016 in a loss to Trinity. Four different Pirates got shots off in senior Malorie Lara, senior Brianna Nunn, sophomore Emily Schmalstieg-Ramirez, and freshman Jamie Vargas.

The defense around Cardone held their own on teh afternoon led by senior Mady Akers, sophomore Mallory Harkins, sophomore Romie Reyna, and freshman Alli Moff.

Southwestern concludes the 2017 season with a record of 3-12-2 overall and 3-8-1 in conference play.
