Pirates Can't Overcome Early Deficit in Loss at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Southwestern University women's soccer team saw their two game winning streak snapped on Friday afternoon as they could not overcome the offensive prowess of the Schreiner Mountaineers, falling 2-0 on the road in SCAC play.

The Mountaineers were the aggressor all afternoon, out shooting the Pirates 16-3 including an 11-1 advantage in the first half. Schreiner also held a 5-2 lead in corner kicks throughout the afternoon.

Schreiner put all sorts of pressure on Southwestern throughout the first half, getting a goal in the 14th minute from Alex Gill for the 1-0 lead. Despite the all out attack, senior Kylie Hunt stepped up in goal and came away with seven first half stops to keep the Pirates within distance.

The Mountaineers found a second goal in the second half as Ruth Blackburn scored in the 64th minute to push the lead out. From there, the Southwestern attack just could not get going all afternoon, eventually falling 2-0.

Hunt had a terrific afternoon in goal, eventually finishing with eight saves. Senior Malorie Lara, sophomore Romie Reyna, and freshman Jamie Vargas led the attack with a shot each in the loss.

Southwestern moves to 2-10 overall and 2-7 in SCAC play. They will return to action on Sunday as they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on No. 12 Trinity at 12 PM.
