GEORGETOWN, Texas – The SCAC Women's Soccer Championship got off to a thrilling start as Southwestern and Dallas took the first match of the tournament into penalty kicks. The Pirates won 5-3 in PKs to advance in the championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team could find the back of the net even though Southwestern seemed to control most of the match. Through regulation, SU outshot Dallas 19-12 with 10 being on frame, but the game still rolled into overtime.
- Southwestern got two great looks at goal in the first overtime, but Elena Naccari continued her impressive play in goal and notched saves to force a second overtime.
- The second overtime came and went with neither team able to notch a goal, forcing a rare shootout to decide who advances.
- In just the third game decided by penalty kicks in the history of the SCAC Championship, it wasn't until the fourth UD pk that the Pirates got the break they needed with one shooter remaining. Angel Grayson ran on from right of the ball and buried it in the left corner of the net to advance the Pirates.
