Former US National Team member named as Head Women’s Soccer Coach

Linda Hamilton, a women's soccer icon, has been named the head women's soccer coach at Southwestern University as announced by Director of Athletics Dr. Glada Munt on Wednesday.

Hamilton was a member of the US National Women's Soccer Team from 1987-1995, earning a Gold Medal as a starting defender at the 1991 World Cup, Bronze in 1995 and a Silver medal at the World University Games in 1993.

"We are excited to welcome someone with Coach Hamilton's credentials to the Southwestern University Pirate Athletic program," said Dr. Munt. "She brings a tremendous level of expertise to our program, but even more importantly, she brings a true passion for teaching the game of soccer to student-athletes.  I am confident that she has the enthusiasm and skills to take our women's soccer program to the next level in NCAA Division III."

Last season, Hamilton was the head women's soccer coach at Illinois College and guided the Lady Blues to a program record 11 wins (11-5-2). Prior to Illinois College, Hamilton spent six seasons at the University of North Florida where her teams made the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament all three years they were eligible after transitioning from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I.

"I would like to thank Dr. Munt, Matthew Grosso and the entire search committee for giving me the chance to lead the Southwestern women's soccer team to new heights," said Hamilton." I am excited to join the Southwestern community and to foster a culture of quality in the classroom, on the field and throughout the community. Southwestern represents the highest level of excellence academically and athletically, which aligns very well with my own philosophy."

Hamilton has also spent coaching stints at Hofstra University and Old Dominion University. She holds a USSF "A" coaching license.

As a collegiate athlete, Hamilton was a standout at North Carolina being named All-American four times and ACC Player of the Year in 1988. She was a member of the 1990 NCAA National Championship team and was a three-time runner up for National Player of the Year honors.
