Pirates extend win streak to three with victory over Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Sarah Bevins' game-winning goal in the 85th minute kept Southwestern's win streak intact as they defeated Schreiner University 2-1 on Sunday.

It was an incredibly balanced game through the first half as both teams had good looks at goal, but neither team put it away as the scoreless tie held strong through halftime.

As the physical play picked up in the second half the Pirates found their attacking opportunities and were finally able to put a goal on the scoreboard in the 66th minute. Ana Gutierrez took the corner kick and sent a perfect, lofting ball into the six-yard box. Megan McGrath was right where she needed to be and headed it home to put Southwestern up 1-0.

It didn't take long for the Mountaineers to respond as Kelsie Nesbitt played the ball to Ruth Blackburn just left of goal. Blackburn sent a laser shot at goal that slid just inside the left post and into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1.

With a beautiful team play in the 85th minute, the Pirates seized control of the game as Ashley Moulder played a perfect through ball behind the defensive line to Sarah Bevins streaking towards goal. Bevins collected the pass and played a low, hard shot into the back of the net for the game winner.

Southwestern led 11-9 in the shot count and 4-2 in corner kicks. Katherine Rodgers posted two saves in the win while her counterpart, Megan Morant, had six saves.

With the win, Southwestern improves to 3-7-1 on the year and 3-1-0 in the SCAC while Schreiner falls to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC.

Next, the Pirates will face their toughest challenge to date as they host #1 Trinity University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
