Women’s soccer makes it two in a row with win over TLU

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern makes it a two-game win streak with a 1-0 win over Texas Lutheran University at home on Friday night.

Texas Lutheran came out strong and had a few good looks at goal, but the Southwestern defense held strong and kept the game scoreless. The Pirates found their groove at the midway point of the first half and had a few near misses themselves as the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.

The Pirates took control early in the second half, taking advantage of a yellow card deep in Bulldog territory. Megan McGrath sent the ball into the box and after it bounced around the box TLU's keeper Erin Rose punched the ball out of the box to the feet of Ana Gutierrez. Gutierrez took full advantage of the situation and sent in a lofting shot towards the far side upper 90. Her shot bounced off the far post and into the back of the net to put the Pirates up 1-0.

Katherine Rodgers made two outstanding saves late in the game to keep the Pirates' lead in tact as Texas Lutheran desperately tried to score the equalizer.

Southwestern trailed 9-7 in shots and 13-4 in corner kicks, but Rodgers made two saves while Rose posted just one in the loss.

The Pirates improve to 2-7-1 on the year and 2-1-0 in conference play while Texas Lutheran falls to 3-5-1 and 2-1-0 in the SCAC. Southwestern remains at home to face Schreiner University on Sunday at 2 p.m.
