Thrilling second half falls against the Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern and Hendrix women's soccer put on a show for fans on Sunday afternoon as the two teams combined for five goals. The Pirates ultimately fell to the Warriors, however, 3-2.

Hendrix posted the first goal of the game early, scoring in the 12th minute as Samantha Lallas played the ball in from the end line to Laurie Waters who put it away.

The Pirates had multiple changes at goal that slid just off frame in the first half, spelling impending doom for Hendrix. Southwestern's defense held the Warriors in check the rest of the way, keeping HC to just four first half shots, three on goal. Nevertheless, Southwestern trailed 1-0 at the break.

Allie Dillon tied the game just two minutes into the second half. Southwestern took advantage of their fifth corner kick of the game, first of the half, playing the ball in front of the goal. The Pirates got a touch but weren't able to punch it home initially, but Hendrix couldn't clear it out and SU took advantage as Dillon slid and poked the ball low into the back of the net from point blank range.

Hendrix broke the tie once again as Kelly Cunningham played the ball in from left of goal to Lucy Moore in the 63rd minute and added one more on a penalty kick by Sydney King in the 66th minute.

The Pirates cut into the deficit with a ball played into the box by Sarah Bevins and found Angel Grayson diving hard toward the goal in the 74th minute. Then, just one minute later,  Krysta Maples was fouled in the box on a breakaway, but Hayley Miesse's penalty shot was just wide of goal, keeping the Pirates down by one.

SU pressed on and had a few other great looks at goal, but weren't able to capitalize as the final buzzer sounded.

Southwestern won the shot count 15-7 and went 5-4 in corner kicks. Katherine Rodgers posted three saves in the loss while HC's Jordan Rausch had four saves on the afternoon.

The Pirates fall to 0-4 on the year while Hendrix improves to 4-1. SU remains at home to face Concordia University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
