Offense ignites as Pirates defeat Austin College 3-1

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern used direct attacks to defeat Austin College 3-1 at home on Friday night in Southern Collegiate Conference action.

Southwestern as plagued early by offside calls as Austin College was very successful executing their offside trap on the defensive half of the field, keeping Southwestern from establishing an attack pattern.

The Pirates didn't go the entire half without getting their chances, however, as Lindsay Jakszta and Sarah Bevins broke free for a couple good looks at goal that were ultimately fruitless.

Jakszta put the first goal in the book with ten minutes to go in the half. Krysta Maples played the ball from five yards behind the midline through the AC defense to Jakszta steaking towards goal. Jakszta found herself one-on-one with the keeper form 18 yards out and maneuvered through the box for the easy touch past Franchesca Lozoya in goal and into the back of the net to give Southwestern a 1-0 lead.

The second half started just as the first with SU getting an offside call in the opening seconds, but the Pirates continued to press on and got their second goal in the 62nd minute in the same fashion as the first. Allie Dillon fed Jakszta who dribbled down field on the breakaway and put the ball home after a one-on-one faceoff with the keeper.

Austin College refused to go quietly as they pulled within one in the 63rd minute. Mandi Sherwood took a blazing shot from left of the goal towards the right post but Mariah Escajeda made a great diving save, punching the ball out of danger, but Lauren Scott was there to clean up and pull the 'Roos within one, 2-1.

Paige Duggins, with the assist from Bevins, moved the Pirates' lead back to two with a beautiful shot into the right netting to move the count to 3-1.

Southwestern closed out the remainder of the match from the defensive line to secure the 3-1 win. Southwestern led 14-5 in shots and 4-1 in corners. Escajeda recorded three saves in the win while Lozoya posted five in the loss.

The Pirates improve to 3-6 on the year and 2-1 in the SCAC while Austin falls to 2-7 and 1-2. Southwestern remains at home to face Centenary College on Sunday at noon.
