Women’s soccer falls in overtime

GEORGETOWN, Texas - After a well-played match the Southwestern women's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday evening.

Southwestern was inches from taking control of the game just minutes into the contest as Hailey Miesse's corner kick found Sarah Bevins on the 18. Bevins' shot ricocheted off the cross bar after clearing UMHB's Craig in goal, keeping the game scoreless.

The Crusaders had their breakaways as well, but Lindsay Jakszta and the Pirate defensive line made the big tackles to keep the game scoreless through the first half.

As the half wound to a close SU got their best look yet with back to back corners, the second of which resulted in a shot by Audrey Silver from point blank range. Craig's diving reaction was just in time to keep the ball from crossing the goal line and sent the game into the half tied 0-0.

Mary Hardin-Baylor came out of the half attacking, testing Southwestern's defensive line early and often, but it was the Pirates that just missed the true scoring opportunity. Bevins brought the ball across to the middle of the pitch and found Hayley Warriner who two-touched the ball to Cailey McLain streaking towards the goal on the left post. McLain got a strong touch on the ball, but it skid just right out of reach of the diving keeper and outside the right post.

After all their hard work, SU finally saw it pay off as Miesse started the attack on a stellar two-foot tackle at the midline. Miesse took the ball away and fed a perfect through ball to Bivens who outran the Crusader defensive line, placing the ball expertly in the back of the net giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead with 23 minutes to play.

With one shot the game was tied as Kristen Hoelscher set off a rocket from 25 yards out that snuck just under the crossbar and above Katherine Rodgers' outstretched arms, tying the game 1-1 with 12 minutes remaining.

The game headed into overtime and just one minute in UMHB snagged the victory. Hoelscher crossed the ball in from the left and found Kathryn Parker 6-yards from goal. Parker needed two touches to put the ball away past a diving Rodgers to score the game winner.

The loss drops SU to 1-3 on the season while UMHB remains undefeated at 3-0. The Pirates stay home to face UT Dallas on Friday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
