Huge second half catapults Pirates to home opener win

Huge second half catapults Pirates to home opener win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern scored three goals in the second half and dominated most of the frame as the Pirates took down Howard Payne University 3-1.

Katherine Rogers came off the bench to make a huge save for the Pirates in the 15th minute as HPU's Stephanie Boggs broke free with a clear shot just seven yards from goal. Rodgers' diving save kept the game scoreless and the Pirates alive.

The Yellow Jackets continued to test the Pirate defense but every time SU stepped up to the challenge and shut down the attack. Southwestern had some great looks of their own including a rocket shot from Paige Duggins off a failed clear attempt by HPU, but the ball was rocketed at the keeper for save.

After an extremely physical first half the game remained scoreless.

It took less than three minutes for the Pirates to seize control of the game. Lindsay Jakszta took a free kick 40 yards from goal that was threatening enough to pull HPU's keeper out of goal. The ball bounced around outside the 18 and Jakszta tracked it down and neatly placed the ball in the back of the net to give SU the 1-0 lead.

Southwestern was clearly a different team as the second half continued, dominating play and spending most of the half in the attacking third of the field. The Pirates added another in the 56th minute as Krysta Maples fed Rebecca Petro straight up the middle deep in Yellow Jacket territory. Petro needed just two touches to perfectly place the ball inside the right goal post and out of Walker's reach to give Southwestern some cushion, 2-0.

Howard Payne made the game interesting as Marley Zochert broke through SU's defense and pulled the Yellow Jackets within one with 13 minutes to go in the game.

Jakszta's free kick with under three minutes to play was nearly a mirror image of the Pirates' first goal. Her ball sailed into the box from nearly 40 yards out and Hayley Miesse put it in the back of the net to give the Pirates a two goal lead again, 3-0 with just minutes to play. SU closed out the game to snag their first win of the season.

Southwestern improves to 1-2 on the season and open their home stand on a high note. SU remains at home to face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
