Strong second half falls short

SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite a strong final push in the second half, dominating most of the period, Southwestern women's soccer dropped their second match 1-0 to Whitworth University.

The Pirates were strong early, pressing hard at goal. First-year Sarah Bevins got two good looks that slid just wide of goal in the first 10 minutes of the contest.

Whitworth made personnel changes and got a couple of shots on goal, but Mariah Escajeda posted back to back saves to keep the game scoreless through the first half.

Fourteen minutes into the first half Whitworth took the lead as Tiara Pajimola scored. Southwestern quickly looked to score the equalizer as they pressed offensively with a barrage of shots on goal including three just off frame inside the 18. Lindsay Jakszta was just inches from tying the match with five minutes to play, but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Southwestern trailed 15-9 in shots but led 4-2 in corner kicks. Escajeda had a huge day in goal, recording eight saves. Warriner led offensively for the Pirates with three shots, two on goal.

The loss drops the Pirates to 0-2 on the season. They come home for the first time this season on Friday, opening a month-long home stand at 6 p.m.
