McClain’s Golden Goal Hands Pirates Victory

BROWNWOOD, Texas - First-year Cailey McLain's second goal of the season, assisted by Maria Pollifrone, in the 105th minute pushed the Southwestern women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime win over Howard Payne University in non-conference action on Monday afternoon.

In a physical match that saw two yellow cards and 16 fouls between the two teams the Pirates came out strong with five shots in the first half to HPU's three. The second half was deadlocked at six shots each with SU taking one more corner kick, but the score remained knotted at 0-0 at the end of regulation.

Pollifrone got things rolling for the Pirates in overtime with a shot minutes into the extra frame inside the box, but HPU's keeper Adrienne Walker saved the ball.  Two HPU shots were off target, sailing high of the cross bar. McLain jumped to action with her first shot just wide of goal, but made the game-winner a reality just seconds later when Pollifrone crossed the ball in from the bottom of the box.

Southwestern moves to 7-6-2 on the year and remain at 1-4-1 in the SCAC. They return to conference play this weekend, facing the University of Dallas on Friday at 2pm in Irving.
