Pirates Suffer Heartbreaking Loss To UW-River Falls

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates women's lacrosse team suffered a close game loss to the UW-River Falls Falcons by a score of 18-16 this Thursday evening.  

At the start of the game, the Pirates seemed to have the advantage and sure win over the Falcons. Within the first eight minutes of the match, The Pirates were up four with the Falcons scoreless. Soon UW-River Falls was able to sink a few goals in the net to get themselves back in the game, but the Pirates still kept a steady lead with Jillie Klumbach and Grace Maynard scoring two goals in the first half and Hayley Donnelly with three assists.

Mckenna Zinke also had a great first half by saving six of the 22 shots taken on the Pirate goal.

With the Pirates ahead in the first half 9-7, the Falcons came out in the second half aggressive towards the Pirates goal and scored two goals to tie the score 9-9. For the next couple of plays, the Pirates would score a goal to get the lead but the Falcons would answer back with a goal to even out the score.  The Falcons gained the first lead in the game after scoring three goals in a row to make the game 13-12.  

Southwestern's Johnee Wolter, who had four goals for the Pirates,  scored another goal for the Pirates to tie the game up again. However, the Falcons gained the lead again by scoring two more goals and carrying the lead to the end of the game with a final score of 18-16.   
 
Standout players were Wolter and Donnelly as the high scorers contributing three goals for the Pirates, as well as Donnelly having the game-high with six assists.  Maynard also had five assists and two groundballs. Julia Tape who plays the defensive specialist role for the Pirates also scored her first goal of the season. 
 
With the Pirates playing their last home game on Varsity Field, the women's lacrosse team gets ready to travel to Shawnee, Okla., to play the Oklahoma Baptist University Bisons. The game will be Saturday, April, 13th at 12 p.m.
